Wastewater treatment in starch factories
Wastewater treatment in starch factories
1. Physical treatment method
Grille and sedimentation:
A grille is installed at the front end of the wastewater entering the treatment system to intercept larger suspended solids and impurities in the wastewater, such as potato peels, fibers, etc., to prevent them from causing blockage and damage to subsequent treatment equipment.
After passing through the grille, the wastewater enters the sedimentation tank. In the sedimentation tank, gravity is used to precipitate heavier particulate matter in the wastewater, such as sediment, starch particles, etc. The settled material can be cleaned periodically for further processing or disposal.
Air flotation method:
Flotation is a method that uses tiny bubbles to float and separate suspended solids in wastewater. Air or other gases are introduced into the wastewater to form tiny bubbles. These bubbles adhere to the suspended solids, making the suspended solids less dense than water and float to the surface to form scum.
The scum can be removed by equipment such as a slag scraper, and the treated water is discharged from the bottom. The air flotation method is suitable for removing fine suspended solids, grease, etc. in wastewater. It also has a certain effect on removing proteins, starch and other organic matter in starch factory wastewater.
2. Chemical treatment method
Coagulation sedimentation:
Coagulation and sedimentation is to add coagulants to wastewater to condense colloids and fine suspended solids in the wastewater into larger particles, which are then removed through sedimentation. Commonly used coagulants include aluminum salts, iron salts, etc.
In starch factory wastewater treatment, coagulation and sedimentation can effectively remove starch, protein and other organic matter in wastewater, as well as some heavy metal ions. At the same time, coagulation and sedimentation can also reduce the color and turbidity of wastewater and improve the biodegradability of wastewater.
Oxidation method:
The oxidation method is a method that uses oxidants to oxidize and decompose organic matter in wastewater into harmless substances. Commonly used oxidants include chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, ozone, hydrogen peroxide, etc.
For starch factory wastewater, the oxidation method can remove refractory organic matter, color and odor in the wastewater. For example, ozone oxidation can oxidize organic matter in wastewater into carbon dioxide and water, and also has the function of sterilization and disinfection.
